Abu Dhabi has officially achieved a landmark advancement in global transportation by launching fully driverless robotaxis. Through a strategic partnership between autonomous technology leader WeRide and global mobility platform Uber, the UAE capital has become the very first city outside of the United States to integrate Level 4 autonomous vehicles into the Uber network.
These state-of-the-art vehicles are currently operational on Yas Island, utilizing a sophisticated sensor suite—comprising LiDAR, radar, and high-resolution cameras—to navigate roadways with exceptional precision. Operating at Level 4 autonomy, these vans function without a human driver in the front seat and do not rely on active remote steering under normal conditions. Early reports regarding the passenger experience highlight the system’s ability to deliver a ride that is both safe and remarkably smooth.
Accessing this cutting-edge service is seamless for current Uber users. When requesting a trip via the app using the UberX, Uber Comfort, or the specific Autonomous category within the designated Yas Island zone, passengers may be matched with a WeRide vehicle. Notably, this advanced technological experience is currently available at a price point consistent with standard UberX fares, ensuring accessibility for the general public.
While the current operational zone is concentrated on Yas Island, this initiative represents the initial phase of a comprehensive rollout.
